Her forte is attacking Search Warrants and Part VI Authorizations to Intercept Private Communications. She is dogged and absolutely relentless in her efforts to pull at the threads of an Affidavit in support of a Warrant, so that the whole thing collapses into nothing.
Nic graduated from Dalhousie Law School (now Schulich School of Law), and since her call to the Bar, she has acted exclusively in the area of criminal and constitutional law; appearing at all levels of Court from the Ontario Court of Justice to the Supreme Court of Canada.
One of Nic’s defining features is her ferocity in defending her clients. She has advocated on behalf of vulnerable clients with mental health issues, aboriginal clients and those facing serious addiction related issues. She has also advocated on behalf of clients facing Dangerous Offender designations.
Nic has a well earned reputation in the criminal bar for her preparation of a brief; her attention to detail; her willingness to challenge anyone on anything if it assists her client. She is, to put it bluntly, fearless. She will grind and push and challenge until the prosecution fails or the Crown just gives up. It has happened time and again.
It is a point of pride for the Firm that we do not settle – we do not plead people guilty as a matter of course. We fight tooth and nail, on every case, no matter how serious or minor the charge. Nic exemplifies that philosophy.
She lives and breathes the Law. She has to be ‘fired’ to take a holiday – banned from the office until her time is up. She resents weekends because she cannot be in Court.
Nic has a fairly restricted practice, and accepts a limited number of Legal Aid cases. However, the ones she does take are almost always devilishly complex and lengthy, with reams of disclosure to review and a multiplicity of issues to work through.
When not in Court, and when forced to relax, Nic’s interests include reading (Rumpole of the Bailey, war history, forensic pathology & philosophy), Olympic-wrestling, judo, boxing, visiting Museums, playing Sudoku & listening to Johnny Cash.
