Taylor Starrett

Student at Law
“Let justice be done though the heavens should fall.” — John Adams

Taylor Starrett is Student-at-Law serving her Articling term with MOON ROZIER LPC.
Prior to joining the Firm, Taylor had a longstanding interest in the criminal justice system, and the broader sociological factors at play. In line with these interests, Taylor completed an Honours degree in Criminology at the University of Western Ontario. Following her undergraduate studies, Taylor travelled to Nova Scotia to complete her Juris Doctor at Dalhousie University, and will be called to the bar in the Spring of 2018.
While at Western, Taylor spent time working with an NGO engaging with the community of Downtown Eastside London to combat discrimination and provide support to those struggling with criminalization and addiction. At Dalhousie, Taylor was a part of Pro Bono Students Canada working as a student researcher for the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund and participated in various research projects related to prison justice and prison reform. Taylor also became involved with the 7th Step Society, a non-profit organization operating to help those who have served time in custody reintegrate back into society.
In 2016, Taylor spent a summer working with Brampton Criminal Division of Legal Aid Ontario. Taylor provided legal assistance to low income members of the community and attended the Ontario Court of Justice regularly on behalf of counsel.
Taylor believes in the importance of enforcing individual rights in a free and democratic society and has a strong commitment to legal advocacy.
Since she has been with the Firm, Taylor has been assigned summary conviction trial matters, where she is designated to act as trial counsel. As part of these exercises, Taylor has had to draft facta – or written arguments based on the anticipated evidence; and then redraft the facta after her principals reviewed it, then redraft it again, and again, and again, until it is polished and perfect. Joking aside, it only took Taylor a redraft or two to arrive at a professional final product suitable to be presented to a Judge at trial. Taylor has assisted her Articling Principals in Court on a 1st degree murder trial – from beginning to end; taking notes and engaging in post-court debriefs and strategy sessions with counsel. She is currently involved in the same exercise on another 1st degree murder trial. Taylor has also assisted in preparing materials for an appeal to the Ontario Court of Appeal.
The Firm is looking forward to Taylor’s call to the Bar so she can take carriage of files herself and bring her dedication to her clients and the criminal law into full practice. If past is prologue, Taylor will be unstoppable in Court, and we pity the Crown who thinks they will be able to push her around.
Although Taylor is articling, and therefore should not have any spare time for any other interests, apparently she does, and they include hiking, NHL hockey, documentaries and cooking.
