Ekaterina (Kathy) Perchenok

Associate
“Justice should remove the bandage from her eyes long enough to distinguish between the vicious and the unfortunate.” — Robert Green Ingersoll.

Kathy Perchenok graduated from York University in 2010 with a Specialized Honours in Global Political Studies and received her J.D. from Queen’s University in 2013. Kathy Articled with the Firm, and was then invited back as an Associate. She was called to the Bar in June 2014. Kathy has appeared for clients in all levels of Ontario courts, including at the Court of Appeal for Ontario.
While her primary focus is on criminal and constitutional law, as part of the ‘envelope of service’ the Firm provides to all clients who retain us, Kathy assists with potential immigration issues arising from the criminal charges they face.
As well, as part of the Firm’s broader responsibility to the powerless and marginalized, Kathy also assists refugee claimants. Kathy is fluent in both Russian and English, and as such we are able to service Russian-speaking clients in their native language.
Since being called to the Bar, and as a function of the boutique nature of the Firm, Kathy has already been involved in a number of lengthy and complex matters, including as co-counsel in several homicide trials. Beyond that however, Kathy has successfully litigated some significant trial and appeal matters on her own. Most notably, she had carriage of a brief that was part of the Project TRAVELLER prosecution in Toronto, which dealt with firearms & drug trafficking. All charges against her client were withdrawn on the very first day of trial.
As well, Kathy successfully brought a constitutional challenge to the ‘mandatory minimum’ gaol sentence for a client charged with procuring, child pornography and internet luring. In result, she was able to secure a house arrest sentence rather than time in a penitentiary. In a similar case involving prostitution and child pornography charges, with a different client, Kathy’s cross-examination of the Crown’s witnesses resulted in the charges being withdrawn mid-trial.
Kathy is by nature a ‘barrister’, and she loves nothing more than being in Court, fighting for her clients.
During her free time she enjoys travelling, camping, and spending time with family and friends. She is also a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.
